Aluminum is a new material having been produced in commercially significant quantities only in the last hundred years. It is a naturally abundant material and this combined with its practically valuable properties explains the emerging popularity of this metal in the modern world. Known reserves of bauxite, the primary ore will last for hundreds of years and aluminum is eminently recyclable at a profit boosting it's established credibility as a "green" metal and a sensible choice for thoughtful consumption of global resources.

Production is currently about 24 million tonnes and secondary - recycled - production adds some 7 million tonnes to create a total of 31 million tonnes. This total compares with 14.1 million tonnes of copper , 6.0 million tonnes of lead and 0.2 million tonnes of tin.
